This past weekend was huge, with Sony and Microsoft already kicking off E3, and Apple announcing their next iOS update. iOS is inching closer to being as useful as Android with each main release, it seems.
As you might expect, in this day and age, the best way to keep track of all the announcements made at the pre-E3 press conferences is to go to one of the big blogs, like Joystiq (if you can manage to sift out the horrible “comedy” and bad puns). Here’s a list of all the major announcements made by Microsoft:
- Halo 4
- Kinect Sports Season Two
- Dance Central 2
- Kinect Fun Labs
- Kinect Disneyland Adventures
- Forza Motorsports 4 coming out October 11
- Minecraft coming to Xbox 360
- Fable: The Journey
- Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
- UFC Fights
- Ryse
- Xbox Live to add streaming television
- New Kinect-based dashboard
- Ghost Recon, EA Sports titles and Mass Effect 3 getting Kinect support
And Sony’s announcements:
- Jack Tretton apologizes
- Uncharted 3 trailer
- PS Vita officially named, priced and dated
- PlayStation Vita developers and publishers listed
- BioShock Infinite trailer
- ModNation Racers coming to PS Vita
- Street Fighter X Tekken to include Cole MacGrath on Vita
- Ruin announced for Vita
- AT&T named as wireless carrier for Vita
- PS Vita to include voice chat as part of “Party”
- Star Trek title to have PSN-exclusive prequel
- Saints Row: The Third to feature Move-compatible minigame
- EA titles get PS3 exclusive bonuses
- BioShock Infinite to include Move functionality
- BioShock title coming to PS Vita
- Dust 514 to be a PS3 exclusive
- Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time announced
- Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest revealed
- LittleBigPlanet 2 getting Move support this September
- NBA 2K12 getting Move functionality
- CinemaNow platform coming to PSN
- Sony releasing its own PlayStation-branded 3D display
- Resistance 3 getting a Sharpshooter Move bundle
- God of War: Origins Collection bringing the PSP titles to PS3
- ICO and Shadow of the Colossus collections coming in September
- Unlock multiplayer Uncharted 3 access at Subway
The big news for me was the announcement of the PS Vita’s price (and silly name). $249 for the WiFi version is much lower than I would have ever anticipated. There is a 3G version (exclusive to AT&T in the US) for $300. This will have the effect of getting one into as many gamers’ hands as possible, encouraging developer support. Although I haven’t touched my PSP or DS in ages, this actually (probably foolishly) makes me excited for a dedicated mobile gaming device for the first time in a long time.
Here are this weekend’s hardware reviews – there are quite a few, so let’s go through them quickly:
