1up.com has the EXCLOOSIVE FIRST LOOK~! at a game I am almost TOO hyped about – Contra IV. Just like New Super Mario Bros. is to the Super Mario Bros. franchise, Contra IV DS lets us forget about all the shitty ports that have been excreted onto the market…
Instead, it looks like they are going back to Contra 1-3’s roots – RUN AND GUN ACTION.
There are screenshots throughout the article, and the game looks how you’d expect post-SNES 2D games to look, if 3D had never been invented.
According to Konami, New Super Mario Bros. was a huge inspiration for them:
“Nintendo looked back and created a game that was based on the original Super Mario, not Mario 3 or Mario 64, and made a game that feels like the original. That’s exactly what we want to do here with Contra. We’ve gone back to Contra III for the controls, the weapon system, even the platforming, which is something that was lost in the later games. Even though the characters are really nicely animated, it doesn’t get in the way of the gameplay; we’ve made sure the game controls exactly like Contra III, except that the X button controls the grappling hook and L selects the weapons. Anyone who’s played Contra III on Virtual Console recently should be able to jump right into Contra 4 and feel right at home.”
Contra IV DS is set for release in October. Tomorrow’s episode of The 1Up Show will have running gameplay footage of the game – SO STAY TOONED!
