It’s nice to have a nice juicy rumor pop up in the middle of a hot, slow summer. Today’s tidbit comes from guru3d, and asserts that AMD are preparing to change the SKU naming scheme of their GPUs to something that is more in line with how they are naming APUs. This is the graphic being used to describe the change:
We already know that the 8000 series exists as a line of OEM only products which are merely rebrands of existing 7000 series product. So presumably the new naming scheme will be using 9 as the main number for the series.
In that case, the first number would be “R9″ with the “Segment” number depending on the performance level of the card – 9970, etc. It might be easier to use an existing product, such as the Radeon HD 7870. This would be called the AMD Radeon R7 870 Series.
Seems to make more sense to me, and it should make it a little bit easier for customers to compare between products.
