Citing sources of “good authority”, British site Hexus.net is sharing rumors of a new Vishera based AMD FX CPU that will run at 5 GHz, available in “very limited quantities”. According to the site, these chips will essentially be the same as the FX-8350 (reviewed here) which runs at 4.2 GHz in turbo mode. The kicker – this chip will reportedly sell for $795 when it hits.
Considering you can pick up an FX-8350 for under $200, you would be paying 4X the price for 1.2x the performance.
That being said, “special edition” chips like these are never meant to be anything more than specialty products. People willing to pay that much for a CPU are few and far between. And those that are, will be able to buy a Core i7 Extreme Edition instead. This further limits the market to extreme AMD fans with a lot of money.
Only time will tell if this rumor holds true; I’m sure for most people, it won’t matter either way.
